Restoration of the tower of Alidakis - 27 January, 2015
In Emprosneros, Apokoronas

Embrosneros: Most residents come from Sfakia and settled in the village after the capture of
the tower of Alidakis, in 1774. Ibrahim Alidakis was a farmer and Turko-Cretan janissary, part
of a elite infantry unit that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops and bodyguards,
recruited from young Christian boys. A story is told to show the wealth of Alidakis; the
stones of the walls were bound together with loam and milk instead of water. In 1774 at
this location a large gathering of Sfakian men and women, under the leadership of Anagnostis
Manousakas from Imbros, after receiving the blessings of their priests, descended on
Emprosneros and attacked the fort of Alidakis, who was preparing to invade Sfakia and
take over the flocks and pastures of the Sfakians. This pre-emptive strike by the Sfakians
resulted in the killing of Alidakis and his army of more than 200 mercenaries.
The Sfakians lost 18 men and 2 women that had fought alongside the men.

The way is opened for the restoration of the tower of Alidakis in Emprosneros, after a program contract to restore the monument was signed by the municipality of Apokoronas, the Region of Crete and the Ministry of Culture. The project, with a budget of 300,000 euros, will be financed by the Region and the time frame of work to be performed by the local Archaeological Service is two years. [...]

The mayor of Apokoronos noted that a study provides recovery of all masonry elements of stone and old mortar. Also, the western dome will be repaired, and the stone staircase and the basement with store rooms. New plaster and a rebuilt stone arch and wooden mezzanine will be made, along with paving and the installation of an iron railing on the northern terrace and the large arched window of the north side. They will also build new wooden frames nailed with iron forged components, and the electricity and plumbing will be renewed. [...]
