At dawn hikers rescued from the Sfakia mountains - 26 January, 2020
Around 3.00 in the morning and after a long and difficult operation by firefighters who walked through the cold and snowy mountains of Sfakia at night, the rescue of 6 hikers lost in the mountain was completed this early morning. It is recalled that these are six Greek hikers who started from Askifou, climbed Tavri and then onto the Niatou Plateau and attempted to descend to Imbros at an altitude of about 1200 - 1300 meters.
The 6 people who were disoriented and lost in the snow and cold on their return to Imbros were identified and transported to a safe spot in Imbros and from there to Askifou, in good health but exhausted from the cold and hassle.
The task for the firefighters of the firestations of Anopoli, and Vryses and volunteers, was difficult as they crossed mountainous areas covered with snow turned into ice and all with darkness falling as the operation began at 19.00 and It ended at 3.00 in the morning.
It is recalled that it was about 1,200 meters high with firefighters detecting them from a fire that the walkers had lit to warm up.
