Final Sfakia report for 2019, Nov 8th

by Jean » 08 Nov 2019, 20:48

Yesterday was very warm and humid again, with heavy clouds hanging over the mountains but quite a lot of sun at the coast. We drove out to the headland over Agia Marina and watched men shaking the olives off the trees with their power-rakes.

In the evening, we had a lively birthday party for Peter at Mesohori with a few of our tourist friends and a number of locals, who finally have some free time to enjoy themselves.

This morning there was torrential rain and strong wind for about a half hour, just when the church service should have been taking place at the old frescoed church in Aradena for St. Michael’s day. We hope that visitors up there were able to shelter in the two large buses until the skies cleared so they could have their feast in the hot sunshine that soon followed the storm. Later, the buses brought them down to Sfakia, and they all crowded into the remaining cafes and restaurants for coffee.

The storm was so fierce in the morning that when I went to Vrisi beach, the flag pole outside the restaurant had snapped in two and was blocking the stairs. The sea has continued to pound in loudly all day, but it wasn’t too rough for a final swim in the hot sun.

With the bright three-quarter moon now, you can’t see many stars, but the light on the sea is magnificent.

We have enjoyed extraordinarily good weather over the last 6 weeks here, and anyone lucky enough to be in Sfakia the rest of this month will probably also get long spells of fine weather, if the forecasts are correct. It’s hard to leave Sfakia and return to cold and chaotic England, but we plan to be back next April. Let’s hope at least one of the webcams will be working over the winter to help keep us in visual contact with this special place.

Pleased to have met you both in Sfakia back in October. Maybe we will meet again next year. There are cold winds from the north to greet you at home so make the most of those warm temperatures. Have a healthy winter. Best regards and belated birthday wishes to Peter.

Thank you all very much for your support and good wishes.

It was strange waking up this morning and not hearing the sea or familiar Sfakia voices, and not even having a current picture from one of the webcams to look at.
