Sfakia report, Nov 6th – olive oil mill, weather

by Jean » 07 Nov 2019, 05:30

It’s been another day of amazing weather – 26C, sunny, less humid, calmer seas.

Businesses that have closed continue with final preparations before winter – rolling up awnings, carting away rubbish and broken items, carrying out thorough cleaning and some repairs. But now everyone has the time to take breaks and relax over a drink and conversation with friends, or go swimming, or play cards in the bar.

Locals are starting to gather their olives now. On my way to Orthi Ammo, I stopped off at the olive oil mill near Frangokastello, which advertises that it is open for tours from 10am-6pm. You just walk in and look around, for free. You can also buy small bottles of oil, and packages olives and herbs there.

With all the machinery working, it is too noisy to ask questions, but the equipment is impressive and the process very interesting to watch. The olives are put into a machine which pulls off the leaves and stalks (which are blown outdoors via an extraction fan) and washes the olives thoroughly. They are then crushed into a paste in a series of 5 grinders. This is fed into a machine that slowly churns the paste so that the oil droplets can join together, and then centrifuges separate the oil from the paste. Families bring their own small containers marked with their names to collect oil for their homes, and there are large vats to store oil for sale.

At Orthi Ammo, the temperature of the air and sea were perfect today, and with only a few people scattered along the beach, it was totally relaxing. The red and white cliffs beyond the beach were stunning to look at.

Several more tourists drifted into the village today, and visitors continue to drive to Sfakia for lunch, so the Delfini and Nikos restaurants still have a reasonable amount of business.

We decided to eat dinner up at the excellent Anopoli Taverna tonight. The temperature outside was 13C, with no wind. Back down in Sfakia it was 22C, and the local boys filled the bar in the plateia to watch the Olympiakos vs. Bayern football match, with all the doors open – and we had great fun watching the locals shout, cheer, swear and groan during the match.

You are being spoilt Jean with the good weather and having the place almost to yourselves.
Just one last thing before you leave.
If you have the time, can you do a final try to get somebody to check out the harbour webcam?
Has it died or is it just having a rest whilst waiting to be cleaned?
The beach webcam seems to be down again but it's been very "iffy" throughout the whole season.
Many thanks in advance and enjoy your last days of holiday bliss. Here in France it's cold and grey.

We were told it seems to be dead. I have tried my best to encourage them to replace it soon.
