Mythical photos from Crete in the 1950s - 5 February, 2016

Claude Dervenn turned to the island in the 1950s and captured people, habits, landscapes and of course many attractions found on his path. The results are impressive.

The 1957 photo of Sfakia reminded me of a similar photo in Xan Fielding's book The Stronghold (the 2013 reissue by Paul Dry Books).

Here is the photo:

It was credited to Fielding's travel companion, Daphne Bath, and taken in 1952 or 1953. I adjusted the contrast to make it comparable to the 1957 photo, which I add here:

The 1952 photo was take somewhat to the left of where the 1957 photo was taken. It's interesting that the 1952 photo seems to include a building at middle of beach (above boat) that has disappeared in 1957. Also interesting, that the boat in the foreground seems to be the same boat, but (possibly?) repainted in 1957.

Finally, I took a photo in 2014 more or less with same composition and from same location as the 1952 photo. Grey-level version for comparison:

Interesting! That building seems to have made way to the plateia, the village square, where the buses stop, since the opening of the road to Chora Sfakion, after 1952.

In 1955 that building was still there:
