A rare film from Crete from the decade 1910 - 1920
Crete a century ago through a shocking cinematic documentary by the French film producer Gaumont Pathé.
The film presents shots from Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion, from the 1910s to the 1920s and saw the light of publicity from the personal collection of Giorgos Vidakis.
According to Mr. Vidakis, "The film takes us shortly after the period of Captain Michalis with plans from the 1910s to 1920s in which the Muslim element coexists with the still fresh feeling of the liberation of Crete.
Unique shots from Chania, Rethymno, Knossos, Urban Heraklion, but also the Venetian harbor of Heraklion with the small Koule, the lighthouse still standing of the Great Koule, the area of the Labyrinth, and the plans for the celebration of Epiphany. Still impressive are the shots from the Ottoman cemetery outside Hanioporta, the still erect minaret in the center of Heraklion, the traffic at the entrance doors of the Chandakas, the cigarette kiosk and obviously Muslims - black-haired women with black umbrellas and covered faces ...
