The 4 shelters of the White Mountains
The shelters of the Chania Mountaineering Association (EOS), which has more than 650 members, in fact form shelters of escape for people of all ages who wish to escape for a while from the modern way of life and find themselves close to the mountainous nature.
Every weekend, hundreds of nature lovers and mountaineers are housed in the four mountainous shelters that the EOS maintains in the White Mountains, which represent the walking routes today. These are the Volikas Shelter, the Kallergi Shelter, the Tavri Shelter and the Svourichtis Shelter "Christos Houlopoulos".
At an altitude of 1,400 meters at Volikas of the White Mountains, since 1958 the first mountain shelter of the Mountaineering Association of Chania has been operating. It is the Volikas shelter which celebrates its 60 years this year. It is the first privately-owned shelter of EOS, which was a vision of the hunters of the Chania mountaineers. "From the Volikas Shelter you can see the whole north of Chania. Geographically it belongs to the boundaries of the municipality of Chania and this year's 60th anniversary is a good opportunity for us to organize together with the Municipality a great celebration with all the people in the shelter next September, "says Stavros Badogiannis, President of the EOS. In the shelter of Volikas they can stay 30 people, and they have the opportunity to visit it all year round in consultation with the Association. It features a well equipped kitchen, a communal dining area and access to the road. (The road stops at an altitude of 1,300 meters and from there you go up to the shelter in about 15 to 20 minutes). From the path you need 3½ hours by feet. The shelter is on the E4 path, the European / national path.
The Kallergi Shelter was established in 1970 in the Kallergis area of the Lefka Ori, at 1,680 meters.
Geographically it is located on the outskirts of the municipality of Platanias. It can accommodate 50 people. It runs from April to October every day and from November to March every Saturday and Sunday. It features a well equipped kitchen, shared dining room, shared toilets, and bedrooms that can accommodate 4-6 people each, for 50 or more people. There is access from the road, while the path takes 1 1/2 hour.
It is on the E4 path, the European / national path.
Tavris shelter (Askifou)
The Tavri Shelter, located at the location of Tavri mountain at an altitude of 1,200 meters in the White Mountains. It is geographically situated at the boundaries of the Municipality of Sfakia. It was inaugurated in 1992. It is a well known retreat for children and parents, as children's camps (once a year for 15 days) have been organised here for 30 years. It operates all year round in consultation with the Association. It has the capacity to accommodate 45 people for an overnight stay and has a well equipped kitchen.
There is access from the road while access from the trail takes 1 1/2 hour. It is on the E4 path, the European / national path.
Svourichtis shelter (Katsiveli)
In the centre of the White Mountains, in the place of the col Svorichtis - Kefalas, at an altitude of 1,970 metres, is the fourth and last shelter of Svourichtis. It was inaugurated in 1992. It is geographically situated at the boundaries of the Municipality of Sfakia. It is a haven to visit for experienced climbers as well as for people with good physical condition and walking experience. It has a capacity of over 20 people, a well equipped kitchen and can be open all year round in consultation with the Association. To reach the Svorichtis Shelter, there is no access from the road, so you will have to walk for 6 hours, but the views are unique! It is on the E4 path, the European / national path.
