Beach webcam down - 25 January, 2018

Dear Sfakia-lovers,

As you might have noticed, and as Bettina already wrote on the Photo Forum here, last night the strong wind took the electricity pole down, to which the beach webcam was attached.

I am waiting for more news, to hear about the damage, and if, how and when we can put it to work again.

Natalia, the webcam owner, just tells me she will try to put the webcam back this Saturday (tu) . Fingers crossed.

There is another webcam on the harbour of Sfakia (Meteocam) which has been down for several weeks now. It was always a pleasure to look each day at what was happening in this beautiful part of the world which is about 3000 kms from where we live in northern Europe. Hope Meteocam gets around to fixing it.

Work is in progress :D

The beach webcam is still working, and uploading photos every minute. It has been saved from the collapsed pole, and moved from the toilet to now -upside down- the kitchen. Hopefully more news soon.

No repair of electricity (and webcam) in Sfakia due to strike - 27 January, 2018

The job for repairs of damage to the electricity network of DEDDHE [Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator] is on hold in Chania province due to the strike that the employees of the company "Sagittarius" of the Kalogritsas group have declared, so that even dangerous situations such as the one in Sfakia will not be addressed.

More specifically, on Wednesday night at about 21:00, the strong winds "snapt" a DEH [Public Power Company] pole, resulting in its trunk reaching the roof of a house, while live wires fell into the yards of the houses.

The residents of Sfakia informed DEH so that they would send a team to repair the damage and especially to remove the cables.

Two days have passed and yet no work has been done as the technicians at the "Sagittarius" crew strike because of the group's debts to them. Remind that the same problem arose in the past when, due to the situation in Mr. Kalogritsas's company, there were at risk or there were considerable delays in the projects of DEDDHE in Chania regarding repairing, due to the company's lack of organisation.

It is worth mentioning that at this point in Sfakia everyday children pass, while the inhabitants have not received any information so far about when the cables will be removed.

So, unfortuantely for the time being, there will also be no beach webcam in Sfakia, since it was attached to that pole...

Natalia of Three Brothers has just installed the Beach Webcam on the roof of the restaurant, so that we can see something while waiting for the strike to end, and a new electricity pole is being erected (tu)

Hopefully next weekend there will be an attempt to fix the webcam back to its original place.

Thank you Natalia for putting the beach camera back up so that we can view the sea, coast, boats and lovely afternoon sunshine.

This Saturday, 3rd of March, there will be an attempt to restore the beach webcam to its original location. Stay tuned, and fingers crossed!

This is how it looked at the 3rd of March last year, 2017:

And this is how it looked a year ago from today, on the 2nd March, 2017, with the first swimmers of Spring [<>~] :

Good luck, Natalia (tu)

Several hotels in Chora Sfakion will be open for the new season of 2018 around the 28th of March!
