Two Cretan airports among Europe’s worst

Two Cretan airports among Europe’s worst - 20 October, 2017

Four Greek regional airports are among the worst in Europe, according to what travelers vote through the Sleeping in Airports website.

This year Heraklion in Crete leads the pack. At Heraklion Airport, like many of the Greek islands airports, travellers queue outside the airport since the terminal hasn’t got the capacity to hold everyone.

Travellers also frequently report long queues; inefficient staff; filthy bathrooms; lack of air conditioning, and in general, overcrowding.

Survey respondents also noted a distinctive lack of seating, poor security, and extended wait times for both check-in and luggage.

There are a few restaurants inside the airport, but the prices tend to be steep, given the quality. All in all, it’s best not to let this airport experience colour an otherwise delightful Greek island, says Sleeping in Airports website.

The other three Greek airports in the worst list are: Santorini at number 2, Rhodes in 3rd place, and Chania in 7th place.

Here is the list according to the travelers vote:

1. Heraklion International Airport, Greece (HER)
2. Santorini National Airport, Greece (JTR)
3. Rhodes International Airport, Greece (RHO)
4. Paris Beauvais–Tillé, France (BVA)
5. London Luton Airport, United Kingdom (LTN)
6. Rome Ciampino International Airport, Italy (CIA)
7. Chania International Airport, Greece (CHQ)
8. Cluj International Airport, Romania (CLJ)
9. Berlin Schönefeld Airport, Germany (SXF)
10. Berlin Tegel Airport, Germany (TXL)

What airports ANYWHERE are nice places these days?? OK, I've not been through Hania for a while and admit that Iraklion isn't great. Would it put me off visiting Crete? No way!! Consideration must be given to the huge demand due to Crete being so popular in summer, whilst in the off season, the demand drops hugely. People will complain about anything!!

We have found over the last two or three years Heraklion to be much improved with few of the above problems mentioned above. This year (October) we got straight through the Jet2 checkin with zero queue and multi attended checkin desks. Luggage now no longer needs to be taken to a separate X-ray queue and we got straight through security with no delay. There were (unusually) seats in the restaurant area and the food there was limited but ok. It was on a Tuesday late afternoon which is potentially busy. When coming in our luggage arrived on carousel very quickly and plenty of planes arriving. All this vastly better than quite a few years back. Our one use of Chania a couple of years back was certainly no better - indeed the easyjet checkin was rather poor with very long slow queue and chaotic re directing everybody to wrong gates etc.

HER has improved greatly, CHQ - very much. Just three years ago we expected worst of any of them, now both are acceptable, even if you travel with little kids.
Frankly, the whole list looks very strange.

We have flown in and out of Chania 5 times in the last couple of years. No problems whatsoever.
