Easter in Sfakia

by jean h » 03 May 2021, 14:54

Wiltrud has sent a photo from the Easter service, of the traditional Judas being burnt on a bonfire.

When St. George’s Day (April 23rd) falls during Lent, it is celebrated on the Monday after Easter, as it was today at Agios Giorgos church next to the Xenia hotel – χρόνια πολλά to all Georges and Georgias.

Wiltrud said that the cafes and restaurants are open now for outdoor dining rather than just take-aways. There are some other German tourists in Sfakia now, plus a small film crew making a romantic movie.

And it has been very warm.

Of course, Easter was different this time: no procession through the village last Friday, the service Saturday night had been earlier than other years. Quite a number of people were present, however a little more widespread. It was still hot at night and the fire and the candle lights were burning undisturbed. No shooting this year out of respect for the recent death of. G. Braos.
