Rare October heatwave is coming
- 2 October, 2020
High temperatures for the season are expected from Saturday 03/10 to Tuesday 06/10. According to the latest available forecast data of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, on Sunday 04/10 and Monday 05/10 the temperatures in the lower atmosphere above the whole country will be 7 to 13 degrees higher than the average value of the years 1979-2010.
The map below shows the temperature deviation at an altitude of 1500 meters above the ground. This height is chosen to monitor the average temperature fluctuation because although it is close enough to the ground, it is not significantly affected by local factors. Yellow and red shades show the warmest and blue the coldest gas masses. Although at this altitude the temperature fluctuation is indicative of its fluctuation close to the ground, the temperatures that will eventually be formed will be determined by other factors such as the presence of clouds, African dust (transport is expected) and the wind. Indicatively, however, it can be mentioned that on Sunday 04/10 and Monday 05/10 the maximum temperature value in the central and southern parts of the country will reach 35 to 36 degrees in places.
All the best,
