Immigrants in Chora Sfakion - Chaos about where they will be transferred - No space available

boat-immigrants2.jpg

The migrants who were located in a sailing boat in Finix Bay in the morning were transported to Chora Sfakion at around 12.00 noon.

So far no exact count has been made but it is about 55 - 65 immigrants. Among them there are 5 minors. The Coast Guard in collaboration with the municipality of Sfakia initiated procedures in order to provide them with masks, food and water.

So far it has become known that the migrants will not stay in Sfakia but will be transported by bus to Chania, as there is no suitable accommodation in the area.

On the other hand, the responsible deputy mayor of Chania, Eleni Zervoudaki, stated that she has no information so far about their transfer and stressed that the municipality of Chania can not accommodate other immigrants. Already in the area of the indoor swimming pool in Akrotiri, 40 immigrants remain from September 21. "There is no other available place to host immigrants in Chania. The responsibility and burden should be shared with the municipality of Chania and other municipalities," said Ms. Zervoudaki, adding that the Region of Crete should also take responsibility. In fact, she stated that the municipality of Chania has already contacted the Minister of Immigration Policy Notis Mitarakis, to state that the municipality of Chania is not capable if it assumes such a heavy burden of responsibility."

The thorough investigation by the port authorities of Chania led to the arrest of two foreigners, of Ukrainian origin who are considered as main suspects in the trafficking of the 59 immigrants who left yesterday, early in the afternoon, from Chora Sfakion. According to information, these are two men aged 44 and 27 will be brought before the prosecutor within the day for further legal proceedings.

The two men were arrested in Sfakia and the information gathered by the port authorities showed that they should be further investigated, for the very serious possibility that they are the traffickers of the 59 immigrants who arrived in Sfakia yesterday.

It is recalled that the 59 immigrants have been hosted since last night at the Akrotiri swimming pool in Chania and they are 47 men, 8 women and 4 children, of five different nationalities, namely Bangladesh, Tibet, Kurdistan, Pakistan and Arab countries.

It is also stressed that in order for this to happen, 40 immigrants who had been hosted there since September 21 and who had departed by ferry from Chania to another destination to be determined by the Ministry of Immigration Policy, had to leave the swimming pool area last night.
