Bad news about the beach webcam - 9 July, 2020

Dear Sfakia-lovers,

I have to share very bad news about the beach webcam in Sfakia

After numerous connection problems, now the webcam physically collapsed. It does not respond to electricity anymore.

Natalia of Three Brothers has taken the webcam apart over the last days, but it appears to be dead.

I am now waiting for her answer, to see if there is any possibility to go on, or that we have to stop finally. I will keep you posted here.
All the best,

Hope there's good news as without my on average two visits a day, life is difficult for me. I could finish up on medication.

Let's hope the camera can be resurrected, as it is now our only visual connection with Sfakia! Like deadeggs, I look at the beach cam several times a day. When it isn't working, I turn to the Gavdos webcam, and occasionally the one at Paleochora's sandy beach, but they don't offer the same familiar connection. Very sad - medication or raki may be our only consolation...

As it stands at the moment, we will cancel our visit in October and save the money for the flight. So if a new camera is necessary, I would be happy to donate again! This cam obviously has some importance for lots of us. :)

Natalia did not answer, as usual. For the last time I have asked her to answer, today : stop, or not stop?

I finally have an answer: the printed circuit board inside the webcam is burned-out. Natalia has contacted the shop in Athens where they bought the webcam 10 years ago, to ask if there is a possibility to fix it. If there is news I will let you all know.

10 years is a respectable age for an outdoor webcam...

Yes, 10 years might be the max.

Natalia will send the webcam to the shop in Athens on Monday. Fingers crossed they can fix it.

A new webcam will cost about € 1100 ... and together with new lines, watertight connection material, international delivery costs etc. it will be more.

Apart from the investment needed, they should consider if it is worth. The bad connection in Sfakia will stay bad, and next year the new website contract is coming again, and Corona is still around, and the tourists not.

I believe it would be possible to raise the amount of money needed to purchase a new camera, and pay other ancillary costs, to keep the beach webcam operating.

If the folks in Sfakia are willing to install the camera, and basically keep it running, it is not unreasonable that those of us who enjoy seeing the view on a daily basis should make sure that the camera is not a financial burden - especially in this time of Covid.

Erno, if you can get an estimate of the total amount needed, let's see if those of us who love Sfakia can't come up with the money.

Ray.

@Kuno and @Ray,

Thank you for your suggestion. I will think it over, make an estimate, and will ask Three Brothers if they are willing to accept, and deliver, with commitment.

This afternoon a guest of them has identified the burned-out part on the webcam's circuit board:
