7 Days of continuous rainfall and snowfall in Crete, 423 mm of rain in Askifou, Sfakia - 3 January, 2020
The "Zenobia" bad weather system was followed by a combination of low pressures in the Eastern Mediterranean with high pressures in the Balkans which created a reinforced north stream in the Aegean. The result of the above conditions was the heavy rainfall in Crete and the snowfall in its mountains for 7 consecutive days (28/12/2019 - 03/01/2020). The maximum total precipitation recorded by the weather station in Askyfou, Sfakia reached 423 mm and corresponds to 88% of the average annual rainfall in Heraklion, Crete. The map above shows indicative values of total precipitation over the 7 days according to the Athens National Observatory / meteo.gr network of automatic meteorological stations as well as the total snowfall recorded by the 2 snow stations: 111 cm in the Lefka Ori and 95 cm on Psiloritis.
