4.5 R Seismic vibrations south of Sfakia - 6 December, 2019

A seismic vibration was felt in Chania a few minutes ago. According to the Geodetic Institute of Athens, the vibration was at 4.5 on the Richter scale, with the focus on the 28km west-southwest of Sfakia.

The focal depth is estimated at 8.5 km.

According to preliminary data, the earthquake at 10:45 in the morning was 4.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was felt throughout the prefecture of Chania, but was shorter in duration than the 6.1-magnitude earthquake of 27 November.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean seismological center, the epicenter of the earthquake was 52 km SW of Chania, 20 km. southeast of Paleochora, near Sougia.

The earthquake was superficial, its depth estimated at 10 km.

A second earthquake followed at 11:00 with a magnitude of 3.9 on 16 km east of Paleochora and a focal depth of 1 km.

Crete on Saturday was hit by a third earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, according to a preliminary reading of the Athens Institute of Geodynamics.

The tremor struck at 5 p.m. and the epicenter was recorded 28 kilometers southwest of the town of Sfakia, off southern Crete, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) gave a reading of 4.5 for the same event. No damages were immediately reported.

Earlier in the day, two more quakes measuring 4 and 3.5 on the Richter scale shook the island, one recorded 27 kilometers and the second 26 kilometers northwest of the small island of Gavdos. Both struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.

This morning at 05.41 there was an earthquake of 3.8 Richter, 31 kilometers west and southwest of Sfakia, with a focal depth of 5.5 kilometers.

At 05.57 an earthquake of 2.7 Richter occurred 31 kilometers west and southwest of Sfakia, with a focal depth of 5 kilometers, and one minute after at 05.58 a 3 Richter aftershock, at 1.5 kilometers focal depth, 44 kilometers northwest of Gavdos and at 06.01, 31 km west and southwest of Sfakia, a 3.2 Richter earthquake with a focal depth of 0.2 km.

Also at 08.41 a 2.6 Richter earthquake was recorded 43 kilometers west and northwest of Gavdos, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

Seismic sequence is considered to be normal by seismologists and it is certain that other post-seismic vibrations of smaller scale can follow throughout the day.

At 00.41 last night the area got a strong 4.2 Richter earthquake after first a smaller 3.6 magnitude shake .

Residents, especially in the southern regions, feel most of the earthquake activity, strong or weak, due to the proximity of the focus to their areas, which has upset their daily lives.

What surprises me most is that the pics from the beach webcam, which I assume to be live judging by the date in the top RH corner of the image, show a flat calm sea. I'd have thought that at least there might be the odd large waving rolling in.

The beach webcam is not live. I select a photo from the same date from the last 5 years, that resembles the current weather situation, and upload it to the beach webcam site, so we can look at something, instead of a dead webcam. If you look closely to the date, you will notice it is from a previous year.

Thanks for the info Erno. I usually look on my phone, where the date info isn't the clearest - and now I know it's not live maybe I won't bother any more. A shame.
