4.5 R Seismic vibrations south of Sfakia - 6 December, 2019
A seismic vibration was felt in Chania a few minutes ago. According to the Geodetic Institute of Athens, the vibration was at 4.5 on the Richter scale, with the focus on the 28km west-southwest of Sfakia.
The focal depth is estimated at 8.5 km.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake at 10:45 in the morning was 4.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was felt throughout the prefecture of Chania, but was shorter in duration than the 6.1-magnitude earthquake of 27 November.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean seismological center, the epicenter of the earthquake was 52 km SW of Chania, 20 km. southeast of Paleochora, near Sougia.
The earthquake was superficial, its depth estimated at 10 km.
A second earthquake followed at 11:00 with a magnitude of 3.9 on 16 km east of Paleochora and a focal depth of 1 km.
F. Valianatos: "It has nothing to do with the earthquake of November 27"
As quoted by Flashnews.gr seismologist Philip Valianatos, "there are several aftershocks, with a magnitude greater than 3.9. The current earthquake has nothing to do with the November 27 earthquake. This crack is not expected to cause much earthquake in the future "
So far no damage has been reported in the wider area of the Municipality of Kantano Selino. Paleochora Elementary School students left their classes at the time of the earthquake and shortly thereafter, but are now continuing their lessons.
