”Greece Like Libya, Britain Like Morocco”: experts warn about global warming - 29 July, 2019

heatwave.jpg

The latest heatwaves that swept across most of Europe during the last several days have been a serious concern to scientists.

Speaking with state-run AMNA news agency, Professor Michael Petrakis explained why the latest European heatwaves are something that should make everyone worry.

”There are studies, which suggest that Greece’s climate will look like Libya’s and Britain’s climate will be similar to that of Marrakesh in Morocco,” Petrakis said.

”Of course, this will not happen immediately but we will need to forget what is known as Mediterranean climate in the long term,” he noted.

Last week, several European countries saw their record high temperatures being smashed, as Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the UK recorded new, all-time highs.

”The world’s big polluters like the US and China should stop being the world’s big deniers”, Petrakis said.

Around 99 percent of the world’s scientists now agree that human activities are to be blamed for what causes not only high temperatures but extreme weather in general.

Hi Arnulf,

I agree with you, not a good idea. But we have to understand that Greece also wants a piece of the oil and gas revenues, like our countries. We cannot blame them for what we are doing / did ourselves.

Currently Norway is the 15th biggest oil producer of the world, Greece the 82nd.

And for gas:

Norway the 7th and Greece the 92nd.

Hello, Erno!

When it comes to my country, Norway - of course you are rigth! We have been a big deliver of oil and gas worldwide, and we are sitting in a "glasshouse" when it comes to speak of saving the climate and reducing CO2 to the atmosphere! In principle will all countries in the world have the same rigths for living standard that we have in Norway, and all countries have the same rigths to benefit from oil and gas production as we in Norway!

Oil and gas will be important for the world for many years, even if the development of alternative energy is increasing rapidly. Norway will be an important deliver for many years. Our carbonproducts are consider to be relativly "clean", but some interesting things are going on in my country:

* the biggest oil/gas - company in Norway, Statoil, changed their name to Equinor ca. 6 months ago. They are now a big company also in alternative energy production, f.i. windpower.

* another company, NEL, is worldleader in fuelcelltechnology. This may be a revolution in using carbonfree energy for trains, ships, trucks/cars etc.

* There is also a big discussion whether we shall start drilling for oil in fagile areas in the north, where we have huge fish resources and nature that draws enormous amounts of tourists - like Crete. For the moment these areas are saved, and I can`t imagine that there will be productions there.

As you mention in your first post - the US and China - and other big countries - are the big problmes when it comes to global pollution! However: We must all do our best in our daily life and behave in a smart manner when it comes to consume the planets rescources!

Hello Arnulf,

I think we are all to be blamed for exploitation and use of fossil fuels.

Nordic Explorer hydrocarbon survey vessel

Ironically, the data compiled by Norwegian surveying company PGS during its surveys of the hydrocarbon-rich areas across the Ionian Sea and south of Crete are the basis for the upcoming drilling there.

No doubt Greece will make the same mistakes as our Northern countries have made in oil and gas exploitation. Let us hope that the nature of Crete will not get destroyed!

Also ironically, according to the newspapers of today, currently in The Netherlands, because of the global warming (last week it has been 40.7° C here, an all-time record), every minute 10 air conditioning systems for houses are being ordered. Soon all airco's here will consume all electricity that is being produced by wind and solar panels. And these renewable sources actually were intended to replace natural gas for heating, not for cooling!

Hello, Erno!

Quite true - it was this big (and experienced) Norwegian company that did the search for areas south of Crete. I think the sea is quite deep south of Crete, so this is both a difficult and dangerous area to get the oil and gas production going!

We had much of the same situation in Norway last week with all-time temp.records and the need for aircondition. This was a totally unknown situation just some years ago.

All the best

Arnulf
