Dear Sfakia-lovers,

Today a final attempt is going on to repair the beach webcam at Vrisi Beach in Chora Sfakion!

You can follow it on:

https://www.beach-webcam-crete.com/

It is not ready yet, so you will initially see some strange images. But let us hope they will succeed (tu)

Work is in progress again. The webcam is sending pictures, but the image is blurred/ not focussed yet.

They are trying to fix that right now:

It appears that the service man who has re-installed the fixed webcam has moved the internal focus setting of the webcam lens. This focus setting was calibrated in the factory...

Now the lens has to be manually refocused, and that is not so easy as it looks.

I have sent instructions on how to do it to Sfakia, both for the manual operation, and for the digital finetuning of the focus. A helper prgram has to be downloaded, and installed, and executed. This is an English language program. But it has to run on a Russian language laptop, running Windows in Greek. So, finding the right menu items to click on is complicated.

I think at least for today they have given it up in Sfakia, after half a day's struggle. :(

We have a bit of a live image:

Later we hope to be able to finetune it. Fingers crossed.

You can check if we make progress here, of course: https://www.beach-webcam-crete.com/

It is getting a bit better, but we will continue tomorrow from noon.

Last update:

The webcam cannot be fixed. It looks like the camera module inside the webcam is damaged, possibly by mould inside the housing, and the CMOS imaging chip looks affected. That is why the image is out of focus/ blurred.

Tomorrow the webcam will be sent for servicing to Athens.

If needed we could start a crowdfunding ...

Currently it is not clear if Three Brothers is willing at all to continue with their beach webcam.

I tried to find a solution, but communication was stopped by them, just when a solution was found, which also included crowd funding.

It is not only a money issue. The webcam needs a dedicated telephone/ internet line in Sfakia, which subscription needs to be maintained. Also it needs someone present there, who knows what to do when the webcam has stopped sending images, e.g. when the electricity was cut, or bad weather played with the lines. And the provider of the dedicated website needs to be paid every year.

Crowd funding is just a small part of the problems that need to be solved.
