Sfakia report, May 4th – removing the boulder on the steps

by Jean » 04 May 2019, 11:59

Today several heavy machines arrived to help deal with the large boulder that fell onto the top of the stone steps during the heavy rains in the winter. We watched for hours from a safe distance. First they dumped a truck-load of soil on the far side of the boulder to make a flat surface for the machinery. They then had to disconnect an electricity line so the machines didn’t snag it. They cleared part of the hillside around the rock in order to remove a few other precarious huge stones, and then started breaking up the boulder, carefully pushing the pieces aside and onto the steps (nothing rolled down to the street below). Now they are loading all the stone debris from the steps onto trucks, and then we’ll see what repairs will be needed to the stone stairway.

Hello Jean,

Thanks for the update of the removel of the boulder and for the pictures. It will be nice to see the results of the hard work they have done when we will arrive again in a few weeks time, since we were there in April.

And thanks again Jean, for all lovely reports you have done since we left Chora Sfakia the 14th of April, we have really appreciated them. Have a nice trip home Peter and Jean.
Hope to see you in October again.

Best regards
Marie and Andrew

The stone steps are clear at the top (although they need a little more sweeping), but where the boulder landed, several sets of steps will need to be replaced. There is a tree hanging above the path that has been seriously undercut and will need to be taken down before it falls.
