Concern for the condition of the Samaria Gorge - 1 March, 2019

Every year after winter, the path of the Samaria Gorge is damaged and repaired in order for visitors to cross it from 1st May, which is the normal date of its opening.

Unfortunately, due to the constant bad weather, especially in the last weeks, beside that access to Omalos is difficult to impossible from the main roads, the entrance of the gorge at Xyloskalo is also blocked, by snow, and a machine to blow it away cannot go there.

Typical is the photograph of Mr. George Drakoulaki last week, from the beginning of the Omalos plateau.

The officers of the Chania Forestry Office are arguing for the damages that are likely to have been caused to the gorge trail, and next week there will be an attempt to reach the gorge, probably from Agia Roumeli.

According to the inhabitants of Agia Roumeli, who arrived at the famous "Doors" (the narrowest point of the gorge), there the river water has surpassed a height of 1.5 meters!

It should be noted that the water supply of Agia Roumeli itself - from the water of the gorge - has been interrupted for a week since the pipeline broke from falling rocks.

In fact, the President of the Local Community Mr. Yannis Tzatzimakis told that he will try - despite the danger - to go to the broken pipeline location in the gorge to repair the damage.

As far as the gorge is concerned, the point is to find out if the disasters are only on the path (which is normal) or if there is damage also to the bridges from the rushing river water, or if there is a great deal of landslides, so repair will take longer.

The condition of the Samaria Gorge is manageable - 5 March, 2019

In a relatively good condition remains the gorge of Samaria, according to the Chancellor of Chania, Polymnia Sklavaki. As Mrs. Sklakavi said, there are problems that are serious, but the gorge is in a relatively good condition as this image is given by the Forestry Department staff, which descended yesterday afternoon in the Samaria National Park. However, as Mrs Sklavaki pointed out, this is the original picture and the final report is expected later.

What forest officials have seen when they entered the Samaria Gorge - 5 March, 2019

samaria-samaria-gorge.jpg
Settlement of Samaria, inside Samaria gorge

Yesterday, Monday 4/3, three forest employees of the Chania Forestry Administration of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, within the framework of an organised enterprise, are evaluating and assessing the current situation in the Samaria Gorge, as part of the Samaria National Park, as a result of the recent floods in western Crete.

Yesterday, the team approached Samaria's northern entrance at Xyloskala, through Lakki at the Omalos plain, walking a long distance because of the snow that in places exceeds half a meter in height. Then they entered the gorge and managed to reach the settlement of Samaria [midway of the gorge] where they stayed overnight. Today, Tuesday 5/3, they have worked near the settlement, and they will spend the night for the second time in the gorge and tomorrow, Wednesday 6/3, they will try to cover the rest of the route in the gorge and up to the southern entrance, in Agia Roumeli.

The assessment of the situation so far and at least for the part of the National Park from Xyloskalo to the settlement of Samaria is satisfactory as the damage does not appear to be incalculable and is generally consistent with the image presented in the gorge every year at the same time of preparation of its opening.

There is relative optimism within the Decentralized Administration of Crete, as it is estimated that, as far as the Forest Service of Chania has reached today, the major catastrophes have occurred elsewhere throughout Western Crete.

The Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration expresses publicly its thanks to the three forest employees who in their own right, in conditions of great danger, fulfill their duty to ensure the opening of the gorge this year in a timely and safe way, since the Samaria National Park is the flagship of nature tourism in Crete.

Rain report Samaria Gorge

Last February 2019, 581.4 mm of rain has fallen inside Samaria gorge:

rain-samaria0219.jpg

From: http://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/samari ... AAPRMO.TXT

In 2019, in January 599.4 mm of rain fell inside the gorge, and 13 mm so far this month, so this year's total so far is 1193.8 mm of rain.

From: http://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/samari ... NOAAYR.TXT

Add to this the rain fallen since the closure of the gorge in October, 2018: 54.0 (Oct) + 291.8 (Nov) + 263.4 mm (Dec) = 609.2 mm, and the total amount of rain that has washed through Samaria Gorge is 1803 mm! That is 1.8 metres per square meter!

To compare: In the entire 2018, 1162.0 mm of rain per square meter has fallen in the gorge. So in the first 2 months of this year the amount of rain exceeds that of the entire previous year.

It's good news that the Samaria Gorge hasn't been damaged (more than normal) over winter with so much extra rain. It will be interesting to see how the other Sfakian gorges have fared when people start hiking this spring.

Photo report Samaria Gorge : How it is after the bad weather - 12 March, 2019

samaria-assessment1.jpg

On Wednesday, 6 March, the three-day assessment was conducted by forest employees of the Chania Forestry Directorate of the Decentralized Administration of Crete in the White Mountains National Park (Samaria) and was completed.

Mrs. Eleni Pateraki and Eleni Dasoponos and Mr. Georgios Somakis and Mr. Markos Nenedakis, of the Forestry Department, crossed the gorge of Samaria from the snowy northern entrance at Xyloskalo to the south exit at the seaside settlement of Agia Roumeli. They spent two nights in the settlement of Samaria, inside the gorge, performed the necessary work and evaluated the situation of the gorge located in the forest, after the devastating floods that have hit Chania.

After the assessment was completed along the gorge route, it was confirmed that the situation is not irreversible, while the usual cleaning and maintenance work is required with additional reconstruction and reinforcement of small constructions.

The Decentralized Administration of Crete, as the responsible body for the operation of the Forest and the management of visitors for 2019, has launched all the necessary procedures for the timely and safe start of its operation.

Yes - we'd like to know about the road conditions too. We usually go up to Omalos to photograph the flowers about this time of year, but guess it may have to be delayed.

29 March, 2019 (latest news I could find):

It is reported by the Prefecture of Chania that due to the continuous landslides caused by the recent bad weather, the roads Alikianos - Prasses - Sempronas (Hilario - Semprona section), as well as the Fournes - Lakki - Omalos road will be closed to traffic until a new announcement from the Regional Unity of Chania.

We also point out that at the above mentioned locations are already the repair teams and machinery of the EE Chania, and that the efforts to rehabilitate these roads continue unceasingly.

Is there anyone guessing when the gorge will be open, coming from Thessaloniki to Chania to walk the gorge May 9-13, should I be making plans to hike somewhere else?
