Biblical are the disasters in the prefecture of Chania, which has been cut in two, from the old National Road and the BOAK, with Platanias, Kissamos and Selino (Paleochora) being blocked.

Monday morning, the Platanias bridge collapsed, on the old National Road, while the bridge at Patelari was closed earlier and, given the ban on passing through the BOAK at Stalos, access from Chania was interrupted.

It is reminded that in the afternoon, the historic bridge of Keritis collapsed , despite the efforts of the last days for its rescue.

Serious problems in the road network of Sfakia - 25 February, 2019

Serious problems in the road network of Sfakia have been caused by the continuing bad weather.

According to mayor of Sfakia, Giannis Zervos, heavy rainfall results in overflowing streams and bridges. There is a big problem at the exit of the gorge in the area of Argoules to Skaloti, in the stream of Kallikrati that starts from the north of the mountain to the back of the Frangokastello Fortress.

Municipal machinery and individuals are trying to remove rocks and soil from the streets, but work will stop in the evenings and, if necessary, there will be a closure of provincial roads.

Also serious damage in Chora Sfakion - 26 February, 2019

Also in Chora Sfakion is serious damage from the very bad weather.

In the area of the hill with the fortress near the new harbour many huge rocks and trees have washed down. One huge rock, as big as a car, has fallen on the steps between the village square and the square with the tourist buses, blocking it completely.

These photos come from a video by Bettina, that was sent to me:

Two houses collapsed in Sfakia - Houses in Fragokastelo were evacuated - 26 February, 2019

damage-sfakia3.jpg

By miracle there was no landslide injury in the area of Sfakia - Closed roads - After 3 days the electricity was restored - No phones in Askyfou

Destructive was the passage of bad weather in Sfakia, which for three days remained without electricity, testing the resistance of the residents, who in several cases were cut off even from heating their homes, due to the interruption of electricity.

Two old houses, one in Chora Sfakion and one in Argoules, collapsed, while for precautionary reasons residents in Frangokastelo were forced, following instructions from the authorities, to leave their homes as there were floods in part of the area.

And in the case of Sfakia there were extensive landslides and many fallen rocks, which resulted in the closing of roads while there was no accident by miracle. The road to Draská, at the exit of the Imvros gorge, and a section between Patsianos and Frangokastello is still closed.

Also, as shown in the photos, the road that connects Aradena to Phoenix and Lykos was closed. The mayor of Sfakia, during yesterday's meeting at the Chania Prefecture, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure, Mr. Xantzis, asked the Minister about the problems that have been presented to the road network for their immediate restoration. Technical teams, under the direction and in cooperation with the municipality, are working at the locations of the blocked roads.

There are also problems in Telecoms in Askyfou - where the highest rainfall rates have been recorded nationwide - with residents not being able to communicate by phone for a second day.

Rocks "landed" in the area of Sfakia

A tremendous rock rolled and landed on the road by dragging a tree and falling over the ANENDYK ferry company's kiosk as well as on a electricity pole. Indeed, it looks like a second huge rock is located on the top of the hill and was stopped by a tree trunk.

It is a fortune that there were no injured from the landslide.

Hello,
Thanks Erno for the update of the dreadful weather situation on Crete.
It was really shocking and sad to see the devastation.
Hopefully there will not be any personal bad injuries.

Crete to receive 10 mln in emergency aid, says minister - 27 February, 2019

bailey-bridge.jpg

Crete will receive 10 million euros in emergency aid after a severe storm caused extensive damage to roads, buildings and infrastructure, Infrastructure Minister Christos Spirtzis has said.

Spirtzis said that the Finance Ministry had given the green light for the distribution of financial aid late on Tuesday.

He said the funds will be used to clear roads and restore access to cut-off villages on the Aegean island.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense will put in place an unspecified number of bailey bridges to replace collapsed bridges and restore access to roads washed out in the storm, the minister said.

First estimates of the damage in the prefecture of Chania alone reach 100 million euros!
