The second meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Programmatic Convention on Cultural Development between the Region of Crete, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Municipality of Sfakia and the Technical University of Crete took place on Tuesday, January 29, at the offices of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, for the elaboration of the research program title: "Venetian Fortress of Chora Sfakion: Geological Surveys of Slope Stability - Investigation of Damages - Proposal for Rehabilitation and Landscape Design for the upgrade of the Monument".

The purpose of the meeting was to present the work of the Polytechnic researchers group, i.e. the presentation of the 1st phase of the program. Professors Nikos Skoutelis and Maria Stavroulaki, representing the group, developed a series of data and criteria on which the proposals for intervention are based, which concern: 1. The cleaning and fixing of the slopes on the rocky hill of the fortress; 2. The historical and geometric documentation of the presence of buildings on the hill and the results of the recent archaeological research; and 3. The rationalisation of the structure of neighboring, related monumental ensembles and the urban design of public spaces.

Within the next four months, the proposals will be submitted for approval by the Ministry of Culture's central offices and the Port Authority of Chania, in order to initiate the work of the first intervention as mentioned above. Next, the consolidation plans for the monument and the organization of the coherent public spaces will proceed.
