White Christmas for Crete comes one day too late
- 23 December, 2018
Of particular interest are the daily updates of the latest forecasting models for the evolution of the weather during the Christmas festivities. The intense but rapid cold invasion in the northern parts of the country, which starts from Monday's Christmas Eve, is expected to cause snowfall initially in the northern parts of the country from Tuesday morning.
As this cold air mass moves south, it will cause rain, sleet and snow in southern regions as well. A rapid improvement in the weather is expected in the northern parts of the country from Tuesday morning, but the cold air mass will move south, resulting in very low temperatures, while the rain showers and snow will remain in eastern Attica and Evia until midday.
In Crete, good weather is also expected on Monday, and Christmas Eve, with only a few clouds, while the winds from Southwest to Southern locations in the eastern parts of the island will keep temperatures well. From Monday night hours, due to a low barometric dip, clouds are expected to thicken in the west and southwest parts of Crete, where there may be few local rain showers.
On Tuesday morning, Christmas Day, Crete will continue to be affected by the Barometric low, giving temporary rain showers in the western and southern regions of the island, while in the rest of Crete the weather will generally be good. The winds will continue to blow from southwest directions with their intensity reaching 5 - 6 Bft in the western and southern parts of the island, while in the other areas their intensity will be between 3 and 4 Bft. The minimum temperatures in the morning will be in line for the season. Gradually from midday onwards, in Crete invades the northern stream from the Aegean while the descent of the very cold gas mass follows. This is expected to change the scene of the weather for the whole of Crete, giving rain, locally strong as well as local storms. These phenomena are expected to continue to affect our island also Tuesday night, while the first snowfall will appear from the early hours of Wednesday at altitudes above 1400 meters. The north winds will be boosted from Tuesday afternoon and will reach 6 to 7 Bft and the temperature will drop very quickly to very low levels.
Wednesday will be a very cold day for Crete with rain, locally strong, while snowfall is expected to go down to lower altitudes, with an average altitude of about 800 meters. The northern winds will blow rather strong with their intensity at 6 -7 Bft, locally in the Aegean to 8 Bft. Nevertheless, the data so far are not expected to cause problems in maritime transport and this is due to the gradual weakening of the winds from the Wednesday evening hours. The temperature will drop to very low levels with a minimum of 7° C for the lowlands, while near 0° C it will be in the mountainous areas and will not change very much during the day.
On Thursday, a gradual restoration of the good weather is expected from the western parts of Crete and shortly later elsewhere. However, on Thursday morning there will be few more rain showers in the east and some snow in mountainous regions. The north winds will weaken very fast in the west with their intensity ranging from 3-4 Bft, while in the east they will stay up to midnight at 5-6 Bft and then weaken. Very low temperatures will occur again in the early hours of Thursday, but later they will rise to slightly higher levels in the west due to the sunshine.
Very good weather is expected on Friday with more sunshine and a little fog mostly in the northern mountainous parts of Crete. The winds will blow from northwest directions with their intensity ranging from 3-4 Bft. The temperature in the morning of Friday will again be low, below 10° C for the lowlands and slightly above 0° C for the mountains.
