Agia Roumeli 5 days without water - 25 November, 2018

ag.-roumeli.jpg

As the local counselor of Agia Roumeli, Ioannis Tzatzimakis says:

"On Saturday, 17 November, 2018, after very bad weather, from Samaria's gorge descended a large flood that destroyed the water network by a fall of rocks. And where the damage just needed over two hours of work, the settlement of Agia Roumeli stayed without water for 5 days because it was a rough sea and the municipality of Sfakia could not send the village's plumber to repair the damage.

I had to personally go to the gorge in the first phase to see where the damage was and I was able to locate it. I informed the municipality of Sfakia, but as we all know, since there is no road access, the municipality can not send the plumber.

So if the sea does not calm down, when the plumber will come is at the mercy of God.

The village of Agia Roumeli has made for two years a request with 80 signatures from the 100 voters for a rural road from Agios Ioannis to Agia Roumeli. So in an emergency, as in the present days, a crew can come to repair damage like to the water and the electricity networks ... with which we have the same problems every year.

The fact is that the municipality of Sfakia has sent the request to the Region of Crete, so the decision now lies at the Region.

We are expecting an answer, regional leaders. The area of Agia Roumeli is inhabitable in winter by people of the region and it is a shame before God to keep us trapped as if we have done something wrong.

And from our municipality we expect to claim this project more actively and not with the cross in hand.

Also who do not believe that such a project will spoil the forest wealth, and the Region is making a big mistake if they believe so, and we consider such as an excuse. When a fire breaks out and the Fire Brigade can not help, this here will cease to be a nature area, gentlemen, and the area will become charcoal.

Also we like to emphasize that we want a rural road and forest, not buses, not taxis.

Thank you very much and we are waiting for your actions.

The local counselor of Agia Roumeli, Ioannis Tzatzimakis, who seeks nothing more and nothing less than a human life that equals the rest of society."

Agia Roumeli again without water - 12 December, 2018

Agia Roumeli has been cut from water supply since last Friday because, due to bad weather, the municipality's repair team can not reach the village to repair the damage.

Meanwhile, the conflict between the Municipality of Sfakia and local residents on the subject of water meters continues, with the President of Local Community of Agia Roumeli, Yannis Tzatzimakis, arguing that the Municipality can not require citizens to pay the water bills when it can not ensure seamless water supply.

Mr. Tzatzimakis pointed out that this is not the first time this year that there is a long-term water cut in the area due to damage to the grid. "About 20 days ago has happened the same," he commented. Continuing he argued that if the Municipal Authority of Sfakia had claimed the creation of an agricultural forest road linking the villages of Agios Ioannis and Agia Roumeli, such problems could be resolved immediately.

In this regard, the competent bodies (Forestry Authority, Samaria National Forest Management Authority etc.) have expressed their concern about the environmental consequences that such a project may have. They had clarified, however, that if there was a study they could be more specific.

However, the Municipality of Sfakia with the inhabitants of Agia Roumeli seems to have open accounts for water as there are residents who have refused to set water meters and have received fines, while others who have put a water meter do not pay bills. "It is not possible for the Municipality to get payment and not to supply water. Our opinion is that in the winter we should not pay and there should be a very small fee in the summer", Mr. Tzatzimakis said, adding that it is unreasonable for the Municipality to ask for money for services that it can not provide without interruption.

In conclusion, Mr. Tzatzimakis noted that many of the region's problems, such as at the harbour, could have been resolved if the municipality paid to Agia Roumeli the amount of money provided by the proceeds from the Samaria Gorge. "We are talking about an amount of around EUR 80,000 which has a contributory nature and should have been attributed since the beginning of the 1990s. But this money does not go to the area", said the president of the Local Community of Agia Roumeli.
