On 1 April, a large part of the upgrading projects at the airport terminal "N. KAZANTZAKIS" in Heraklion will be ready, and on 20 April the whole project will be delivered, which will give a great "breath" to Greek Tourism and to the arriving tourists, at the extremely busy airport.

This very large work was carried out in just 5 months, with absolute success, being an example to be imitated.

The project concerns the complete renovation of the building, with new, beautiful shops, tax-free shops and other facilities, like dining outlets and a VIP area, etc.

A new departure area of 3000 sq. meters was built, next to the 8,000 sq. m. of the old space, creating 11 gates with their own elevator (9 gates on the ground floor and 2 on the first floor).

Two new halls were also created - with one lounge in the extra-Schengen area, and two in the intra.

The shops occupy an area of 2200 sq.m. (new flooring, wooden linings, led lighting, new air conditioners, etc.), with 6 new refurbished gates and two in the check in area.

This does not sound very Greek to me. What went wrong with their cultural traditions? [hypo]

It must be 15 years or more since I last used the airport at Heraklion. It was overcrowded back then. I hate to imagine what it has been like recently.

Maybe this is a April Fools' Day hoax? I am not sure. So far this news was published by just 1 source, and then spread by FlashNews (and now me...) :?:

IF this news is not fake, then it is the fulfilment of the news that was announced previously here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=333

7 August, 2016

The green light for the expansion of the airport "N. Kazantzakis" in Heraklion was lit by the Defense Ministry, reacting positively to the request of the local authorities and representatives of the Government, to grant the necessary land from the former 126 Combat Group and the SEAP [Reserve Officers School of Infantry], in order to enable the continuation of the authorization for upgrading the airport. So, NO April Fools Day joke!

New photos of the upgraded Heraklion airport - 2 April, 2018

Upgrading facilities have been completed and a modern look is being made to upgrade and serve millions of visitors.

The renewed airport will be delivered gradually until April 20th, when the inauguration will take place. Some of the additions that have been made are the creation of two rooms, new modern duty-free shops, 6 new refurbished exits and two more at the check in.

Two halls were also created - lounges in the extra schengen area and two in the intra.

Finally, it should be stressed that an expansion of the departure area is also taking place and at the same time the number of gates for arrivals and departures of passengers is increasing.

Well, as with all publicity, they only show you what they want to show you. If you put the workmen, hammers and drills back in to the above photographs you'll get a better idea of reality. Arrivals bag collection area just the same as usual for now, departures area is actually worse for the moment as they've had to put it all into one of the baggage carousel areas while the work is going on - cattle market is a phrase which springs to mind :(

I'm sure it will all be lovely when it's done - but it's not done!

Thanks for the update! It is supposed to be ready on the 20th of April, so one more week to go. Does it look like they are going to manage that, in 1 week?

Heraklion Airport gets new look with €13 million revamp - 2 May, 2018

heraklion-airport-renovated2018-1.jpg

Heraklion International Airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” on Crete on Monday inaugurated its new Duty Free shopping area, following extensive renovations to the airport, which added up to a total of 13 million euros, an investment made by Hellenic Duty Free Shops. The project included an expansion of the airport by 2,895 square meters and a full refurbishment to an already existing space of 8,000 square meters.

“In 2017, Heraklion’s airport was voted as the worst in the world… Now, we are in an area that is the best expression of European Greece. In an area where cleanliness, respect, smile, class, courtesy and elegance co-exist,” Hellenic Duty Free Shops Managing Director George Velentzas said during the opening ceremony of the duty free market.

For years, the airport of Heraklion has been criticized mainly for its size due to massive crowds and long lines during the summer months.

According to Velentzas, Hellenic Duty Free Shops will be investing a total of 55 million euros to upgrade the travel experience in Greek airports. The sum includes the company’s refurbishment project at Athens International Airport last year, the revamp of the Duty Free area at Heraklion airport and the planned revamps at the 14 Greek regional airports managed by Fraport Greece.

The refurbishment project, which took a total of 165 days without once disrupting the operation of the airport, included moving the retail outlets of the duty-free shops from the airport’s first floor to its ground floor and positioning them on the basis of a walkthrough concept.
Greek Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis.

According to data provided by the Greek Transport Ministry, passenger traffic at the airport in Heraklion has increased significantly over the years. “In 2010 the airport welcomed 3,887,040 arrivals and departures of passengers. In 2017 this number reached 7,484,490. Similarly, there is an increase in aircraft activity. In 2010, the airport saw 26,003 aircraft and in 2017 the number reached 54,587,” Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis said during his speech.

“Crete now has an airport for which we are no longer ashamed of. A modern airport, which will operate for several years until the Kastelli airport project is completed,” Spirtzis said.

This year, the airport of Heraklion is expected to serve some 8 million passengers; 4 million departing and 4 million arriving.

The investment project at Heraklion’s airport includes the addition of a new 2,895 square meters departure hall on the ground-level. The airport now has 11 departure gates, nine on the ground floor and two on the first floor. The already existing 8,000 square-meter departures area has been fully renovated. The new duty free section covers an area of 2,054 square meters.

Moreover, four waiting lounges for distinguished passengers were created; two in the Extra Schengen area and two in the Intra Schengen area. All restaurants and eateries in have been renovated, new fire protection systems were added and a new air conditioning system was installed in the airport’s newly extended area. [...]
