Re: Sfakia report, Nov. 2 – weather, Kalikratis

In the evening, the Halkion closed its cafe and took all its nice seats and tables inside, so another empty space has now appeared along the front street.

Sfakia report, Nov. 2 – weather, Kalikratis

During the night there were strong gusts of wind from the north. Friends who had arrived Friday evening reported heavy rain around Suda Bay, and lighter rain until Imbros; down here, we only had about a half hour of gentle rain. This morning was partly cloudy but warm (23C), with a slight breeze. Om...

Sfakia report, Nov 1st

Kalo mina! The weather forecast wasn’t good for today, and in the morning we could see that it was raining out near Gavdos, but in Sfakia we enjoyed a good amount of sun with warm temperatures. Dark clouds hung over the mountains all day. rain near Gavdos.jpg It was delightfully quiet here. There we...

Re: Webcams.

The people in charge of the harbour webcam have checked it and cannot figure out why it isn't working; the camera is old, so maybe it has just died. Let's hope that at least one of the cameras will be fixed or replaced soon so Sfakia addicts can look at the views over the winter.

Sfakia report, Oct 30 – excursion

On Wednesday, there was an excursion organised by Papathanasis going to several monasteries and churches in the west of Crete. Trips like this provide a welcome break from the village, especially for many of the women. There were about 20 people on the excursion, including Wiltrud and me. We left Sf...

Sfakia report, Oct. 31 - end of season feeling

The weather was sunny and very warm again today, but in the afternoon it became partly cloudy with the wind increasing, which made the sea rough. Rain is expected later tonight and over the weekend. Tourists and some staff have gradually been leaving this week, with workers from Loutro arriving by s...

Sfakia Report, Oct 28-29 – exotic fish, Dasklogiannis cave, Roumeli, signs

The weather has remained unrelentingly sunny, and the air is still very warm, as is the sea, although both are starting to cool down a little. This morning, for the second time in the past week, I have seen a beautiful exotic fish when swimming out near the rocks – a lion fish (pterois miles). These...

Sfakia report, Oct 27th – walk to Amoudi, signs of autumn

Yesterday after the Daskalogiannis left for Loutro with participants in the Vertical Run, Wiltrud and I decided to walk over the headland from the new harbour to Amoudi beach as there was a little breeze to help relieve the heat of the sun. The views from the headland are wonderful in all directions...

Re: The Typhoon arrives in Sfakia

Last night two very bright, large lights appeared over the Loutro headland. We assumed it was the Typhoon at anchor off Phoenix. Typhoon's lights.jpg This morning the Typhoon quickly passed by Sfakia without stopping - maybe they couldn't find any rubbish off the coast here? the Typhoon.jpg Typhoon ...
