Poppy's son Stamatis is probably a good bet for a lift. Surprisingly, his idea of an early start isn't before 0700 but that should be OK. He'll charge you, but not an unreasonable amount.

I do so hope this is successful, both for the benefit of tourists and of the local people. The proposal for a road was being discussed when we first visited Sfakia in the late-1970s and probably for years before. While I have a lot of sympathy for the residents of Roumeli, the walk between there and...

The answer to the rough Sfakian terrain is to take a pair of old non-waterproof boots that are no-good in our damp british climate & leave them behind in sunny Sfakia- in a waste bin of course!! I still have about 5 pairs left to sacrifice to Sfakia! Dave I operate in reverse. Two or three year...

If you haven't already done so I suggest you get hold of the Anavasi maps covering SW Crete and also a walking guidebook which covers the area: our own favourite is Loraine Wilson's The High Mountains of Crete published by Cicerone Press. Armed with those you should be able to put together a possibl...

Can't wait to try it out. This June it took an hour to check in the queue of passengers (an ordinary A320 load of say 180 people) through a single desk. And there was just the one baggage screening machine - had there been another flight checking in at the same time there would have been chaos. It w...

As far as I'm aware there is no accommodation in Livaniana. The village is now all-but deserted. The nearest places to stay would be on the coast at Lykos (the Small Paradise and the other two tavernas-with-rooms). As I expect you know, from there you caneasily walk up to Livaniana on the old donkey...

There were plenty of mosquitos in Ag Roumeli last week. Though I wasn't bitten in Sougia, Likos or Chora Sfakion. Like Mike, I am a magnet for anything which bites or stings, but it wasn't just me being nibbled. If you're susceptible I'd suggest bringing some repellent with you and/or covering up. Jan

Can confirm the lunchtime closing (and no access/honesty box) during that time.
A great shame as we too were looking forward to seeing the new arrangements. Two other people passing at the same time were also disappointed.

More than a teeny bit...
Pleased that you saw the peonies in full flower. They'll be long gone by the time we're there in June.
