Re: Sfakia report, Oct 19th: "Queen of the Night" flower

Dear Chips,

We haven't had decent sunsets for several days because the sun has been slipping behind a curtain of haze. Last night just after this photo, the sun also disappeared into the haze.

Only a little difficult to find it - just look around for the cairns.

Sfakia report, Oct 18: Ilingas gorge to Mouri, part 2

Part Two: Mouri Across the gorge bottom from Timios Stavros church, a path marked with a faded red dot and small cairn leads to a well with fencing around it. You can then get onto the path to Mouri by stepping over the fallen wire fence to the right of the well and curving up to the left – you will...

Sfakia report, Oct 18: Ilingas gorge to Mouri, part 1

Part One: up the gorge On Thursday, six of us decided to walk up the Ilingas (Kavis) gorge to Mouri – some of us had done this walk very many years ago, but for two it was the first time. You hike from sea level to 1000 meters high, so it can sap your energy. Many tourists are familiar with the bott...

Sfakia report, Oct 19th: "Queen of the Night" flower

Tonight the magnificent Queen of the Night cactus ( ? Hylocereus undatus ) bloomed just up from the Lefka Ori rooms. Sfakia report, Oct 17th: Agia Marina beach; antikristo

It was a beautiful warm day although partly cloudy. Since the village beach has been quite busy lately we decided to drive down the coast to Agia Marina beach (below Skaloti), first diverting to Lakkoi for a quick look (first photo(, then stopping to watch some griffin vultures that were gliding alo...

(non)Sfakia report from Monday, Oct 15

On Monday it was partly sunny in Chora Sfakion, but the weather didn’t look good for hiking higher up, so we decided to drive north out of Sfakia to the Apokoronas district and visit some old churches which have frescoes painted by a famous 14-th century artist, Ioannis Pagomenos (see https://wordsc...

Re: Flower report, October 10th, Anopoli and Ag. Ioannis

A botanist friend of Jean Bienvenu's has identified the ranunculus as R. bullatus - the flower can have between 5-12 petals.
