Re: They are beautiful, they are Sfakians

Wonderful, dignified photographic portraits, and it's very nice that we know several of these men.

Re: Closed schools in Sfakia due to snow

Wow - what a harsh winter after last year's with no snow. At least there should be enough water in the summer for the sheep and goats in the mountains.

Re: Podarikó: The Greek New Year’s custom is still alive

Very interesting! Has anyone experienced New Year's Eve customs in Sfakia? I was told they smash pomegranates by the front door but have never been there on the day.

Re: Groceries and eating out in November

Yes to both! The restaurants that should be open are The Delfini, Nikos, and Mesohori - but they don't stay open late waiting for the few customers, so tell them ahead of time if you intend to eat there, and try to order by 6:30-7pm. They are open at lunch time as well, of course. The back supermark...

Final Sfakia Report, Nov 7-9

Sfakia report, Nov 6th

The morning was warm and sunny again. Having watched the Samaria load up for its trip to Loutro and Gavdos, we walked to the new harbour for a taxi-boat excursion. More boats have been taken out of the water for the winter, and the Neptune is also parked there until the spring. boats up for the wint...

Sfakia report, Nov 5th

It was another warm morning, but partly cloudy. Locals were getting on with end-of-season tasks. At Georgia’s cantina, her son was cutting back the tamarisk trees. The Alkion has closed its café now, so tables and chairs have been taken away, and pot plants were being moved to their winter location....
