There is a tarmac road almost all the way down there, just the last bit you need to walk.

If you take the bus in the morning there will still be plenty of shade in the gorge. From Marmara to Loutro however is very exposed and shadeless, it will be a very hot walk of 1,5 hours. So I have not seen any 4G in Sfakia yet, but 3G is indeed excellent, from both Cosmote and Vodafone.
There is a Wind network too but it only seems to have 2G.
Both Sfakia and Anopoli seem to be covered from the masts that are at the top of the road to Anopoli.
