Re: Phoning another mobile on Crete.

Last year I could not get a SIM card in Athens airport. I had to wait until I got to Chania.

Re: Sfakia report, May 2nd, upper Aradena gorge

Jean said: " You come across an old crashed car early on – it’s hard to figure out how it could have gotten over to the ridge at that point." Jean: The next time you are on the road from Anopolis to Aradhena, at the first major switchback, you'll notice that there's an opening going straig...

Re: Why Greek Orthodox and Catholic Easter will never coincide after 2700

Erno.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this.

Along with other interesting information, it answers a question I have had: why do Greek Orthodox celebrate Christmas on 25 December, but celebrate Easter along with the other Orthodox churches?

Now I know. Thank you.

Re: Walking to Domata Beach

Svein. The walk itself is not particularly dangerous. There are some places where the path passes close to a cliff face and such. But those aren't really dangerous places. The path isn't that close to the cliff face, and it's a decent path at that point. The danger is that is the path is not frequen...

Re: Looking for recommendations for a 2 day hike around Chora Sfakion & White Mountains in September

Rhys Rogers. Two points. 1) For a description of the route the allied troops took from northern Crete to Sfakia, see: Dalidakis, George K. and Peter Trudgill, "Sfakia: A History of the Region in its Cretan Context", Heraklion, Crete, Mystis Editions, 2015, pp. 263-273. (The book is availab...

Help Protect Sfakia's Vultures

While we were in Loutro last month a friend of ours, a bird watcher, came for a first stay in Loutro. She found the region beautiful and was pleased to have her first sighting of a number of birds. She especially enjoyed watching the vultures soar over the escarpment behind Loutro, in part because v...

Re: ferry

We were in Loutro on 27 June, and noticed that: 1) the Daskalogiannis had spent the previous night in Chora Sfakion; and 2) that the Neptune took the morning rush of departing tourists from Loutro to Chora Sfakion. This was the ONLY time in the 3 weeks we spent in Loutro that this happened. On the 2...

Re: E4 accommodation

Jane. Dave has provided a doable itinerary. I personally wouldn't choose that itinerary - too many buses and boats. So, here is an alternative. I don't know much about Crete west of Domata Gorge. But, there is a nice walk from Sougia that can be done in a day from Chania. http://www.sougia.info/walk...

Re: Anopolis to Kalli Lakki down the Sfakiano gorge

Styacke. A few more comments. 1) From the enclosure above KL, going down the ravine is easy. It's not steep. And the sides of the ravine are not steep. It's marked on the Anavasi map I have - but as I said, if there's a path in the ravine, I didn't see it. As long as you're in the ravine, and keep g...
