The tragedy struck Chania's society on Friday night, Saturday morning, when four young people, four friends of which two brothers, fell victim to a naval accident in Phoenix, Sfakia, shortly before returning to Loutro where they were staying for vacation.
The four friends had a speed boat in Agia Roumeli and in the evening, after a stop at the beach of Marmara, on their return to Loutro, at about 1:30 am from unknown cause, the boat at great speed hit the rocks in area of Phoenix.
Residents of the area who heard the terrible noise from the crash of the boat informed the authorities, after which from Chora Sfakion ships of the Port Police and ships of Sfakians with their own boats and then firefighters from the Anopoli fire station rushed to the spot.
As soon as the rescuers arrived, they found that one of the speedboat passengers, MK 31, was seriously injured, and the efforts were focused on pulling him back on board and then brought him to the Chora Sfakion clinic and from there to the Chania Hospital, with multiple fractures.
In the meantime, from the debris of the boat and from the rocks, were found dead, SP and KK, two brothers of 32 and 33 years old, dentists, as well as a 35-years-old club owner in Chania, and were recovered.
All three bodies were transported to the port of Chora Sfakion and to the regional clinic, where scenes of an ancient tragedy were performed during their identification by the relatives who had been notified and rushed to Sfakia.
The Coast Guard's announcement of the tragedy:
In the early hours of today, the Port Authority of Sfakia was informed about a crashing incident on the land of the speedboat "NIKOS", Chania 975, with four (04) crew members, in the marine area of the "Móures" peninsula [Άκρα Μούρες] near Loutro, Sfakia, Chania.
Directly to the area sailed a patrol vessel LS-EL.AKT., and the private boats "TAXI STAVROS", "ASTRAPI" and "AKROGIALI", while the Fire Service was informed for assistance.
The 35-years-old was identified and recovered from the sea, unconscious, by the "ASTRAPI", who carried him to the port of Chora Sfakion, from where he was driven by ambulance to the Multipurpose Regional Medical Clinic of Chora Sfakion where his death was recorded.
At the same time, the 31-years-old was spotted in the sea, conscious, by the "AKROGIALI" and, after being transferred to the clinic of Chora Sfakion, and was then transferred with an ambulance vehicle of the EKAB [rescue brigade] to the General Hospital of Chania, where he remains hospitalized.
In the area of impact, on the rocky coast, was found the speedboat "NIKOS", which was overturned and trapping one of the passengers, while the other passenger was nearby. Due to the awkward position of the incident, the Fire Brigade officers attempted to unblock them, and pulled out the 32-years-old and 33-years-old being unconscious. Both were received by the patrol vessel LS-EL.ACT., which arrived at the port of Chora Sfakion, and then transferred to the clinic of Chora Sfakion, where their death was recorded.
By the Port Police of Sfakia from the Central Port Authority of Chania, which carries out the preliminary investigation, an authopsy was ordered.
