Restoration of water supply in Anopoli
- 14 January, 2019
On Sunday, 13 January, water supply was restored to Anopoli after many days of inconvenience of both the residents and the technical team that tried to repair the damage in very difficult conditions.
The Municipality of Sfakia, through direct actions, tried to address the problem that arose on 30/12/2018, proceeding to supply a new pump station and trying to move machinery and personnel to the point of the broken pumping station.
In order to restore the road network leading to the site, the project was assigned to a private contractor but due to the heavy rainfall and the fact that the road is in a stream, it was unable to complete the work until it was allowed by the weather conditions.
After the accessibility was restored, it was possible to transport the crane and the contractor assigned to the installation. During the works and in particular against the outlet of the pipeline of the pump of the plant, the crane was damaged mechanically, resulting in the work being stopped waiting for transportation of a component from Chania to be repaired.
After the damage was restored, the work related to the exit from the facility was continued, a 420 meters long drain. When the repair, assembly and fitting procedures with the new pump were completed, they were transported from Chania to the location and we proceeded with their installation.
We want to point out the whole effort that has been made since the very first moment to tackle the problem as quickly as possible, it has become the best we could in a human context facing severe weather conditions, technical problems and the nature of the work. Typically, each 6 meter long pipe needs to get unscrewed and screwed by hand.
The Municipality did this before 2.5 years ago, to deal with a similar event, replacing the pump station, and because of the good weather conditions then and the fewer technical problems we were able to solve the problem in a shorter time.
We would like to point out that from the very beginning the present municipal authority has prioritized addressing the problems of water supply in particular in the Anopoli area, where the water supply comes from a single drilling rig that is 420 meters deep and the technicians refer to it as the most difficult of Crete.
In this context, a program contract has been signed with the OAK [Development Agency of Crete], which has secured the financing of 75.000 € from the Region of Crete for the exploitation of Sweet Waters and the location of new drilling and networking from Illingas to Anopoli. Until now OAK, despite our repeated attempts, failed to respond substantially to other demands of the Municipality. Geologist of OAK following a request by the Municipality, recently visited the site where two new drilling spots were located and every effort will be made to license and finance the work of the two new drilling stations, hoping for a positive result that will ensure the water supply of Anopoli but will also be able to contribute water to Chora Sfakion.
We would like to point out that the Municipality, in Pavlos Polakis City Hall, had secured funding for the supply - upgrading of the water supply facilities in Anopoli and while the present municipal authority had received all the legal approvals for the implementation of the project at the Crete service level, it was not considered eligible by the Rural Development Program in 2016, with the result that the funding was lost and the project was not implemented.
