Winter from Wednesday in Crete
- 23 September, 2018
Sudden change of weather with winter characteristics
A change in the scenery of the weather is expected to begin gradually from Tuesday which will affect the whole of Crete, with the main features of strong Northern winds, rain and a significant drop in temperature that will become more noticeable from Wednesday. Although the predictive model data do not yet show a clear picture of the extent, intensity and duration of the rainfall, this weather change seems to be confirmed, which in any case requires particular attention because the island is still in full tourist season mode.
Monday it is expected to keep good weather throughout Crete with only a few clouds in the western mountainous regions. The winds will generally blow from western directions, with their intensity in most areas reaching 3 - 4 Bft and only locally up to 5 Bft. The temperature will be maintained at good to high levels with maximum values ranging slightly above 28° C in the northern parts of the island, while in the south it will reach up to 32° C.
On Tuesday morning the weather will generally start good with sunshine, but gradually from the midday hour the clouds will increase and later the rain, mainly in western and central regions of Crete, is expected to appear. The northern winds will be gradually increase from Tuesday afternoon and until the evening hours the intensity will reach 5 -6 Bft, locally in the Aegean, in the west and in southern regions of Crete up to the 7 Bft (there is also a chance in central Aegean to reach up to 8 Bft). The temperature will start to drop very quickly from Tuesday nights.
Winter will be the weather scene from Wednesday with further significant temperature drops and sustained northern winds in the Aegean and southern regions of Crete, with an intensity of up to 8 Bft. Because of the very strong wind, high waves are expected on the northern coast of Crete. Particular attention should also be paid to the significant drop in temperature, particularly in mountainous areas. It will begin to snow over 2200 m on Psiloritis and in the White Mountains.
Newer elements of predictive models are expected to give a better picture of rainfall, for whether and when it will appear throughout Crete, or their local intensity, as well as for their preservation during the next few days. Although the northern stream does not favor the appearance of rain in the eastern and southern parts of the island, there are indications that the evolution of the bad weather is likely to leave enough surprises.
