Dear Sfakia and Crete-lovers,

Please note that from this year 2018 a new national stayover tax will be imposed to all hotel rooms, studios and apartments for rent and calculated based on the number of overnight stays and the category of the accommodation unit, ranging from 50 cents to four euros per room.

In Sfakia this means that in general you will be charged 0,50 Euro per room per night extra, so on top of the arranged/ announced room rate. This tax goes directly into the Greek Central Government's coffers, and not into the pocket of your landlord, and is part of the austerity measures imposed on Greece by its international lenders.
