Swimming from Sfakia to Gavdos for bone marrow donation - 15 June, 2019
Promotion and awareness raising of the Horizon Association, which supports children and adults with cancer, is the goal of the crossing of Sfakia-Gavdos, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, 21 June, by Vasilis Vrontakis, swimming a distance of 20 nautical miles in order to promote the a message of volunteering and to highlight the importance of bone marrow donation.
As stated in the Horizon Communication: "For the first time ever, Vassilis Vrontakis, who is also the initiator of the venture, will swim 20 miles (38 kilometers) far, surpassing himself. According to his estimate, the distance will be covered in about 12 hours.
Last year he took part in the swim cross of Toroneos gulf, in Nikiti Chalkidiki, a 26 km race, in which he won the second place after 6 hours and 50 minutes. He trains daily and swims more than 2 hours in order to be ready by the end of June. Of course, the difficulties in his effort are not only limited to the long distance but include weather, sea currents, waves, wind ...
The ultimate goal is to inform and raise awareness among fellow citizens about the work of the Horizon Volunteer and Support Association, supporting children and adults with cancer, promoting the message of volunteering and highlighting the importance of bone marrow donation. Of great importance is that as the number of documented volunteer donors increases, there is a growing chance that more compatible donors will be found, donating their bone marrow cells, offering a second life opportunity to our fellow humans."
The project will be carried out with the support of the Regional Unity of Chania, the Municipality of Sfakia, the Municipality of Gavdos and the Cultural Association of Chora Sfakion.
