Re: Pachnes

Yes, us too. We actually - and reluctantly - made the decision a while ago and are now convinced it's the right one.

Has anyone walked this route in the last couple of years, please? It's a while since we last did it and even then the trees were growing quite densely and 'spoiling' the view. It would be good to hear from anyone who's walked the forest section (we know the second part, from Achlada, reasonably well...

Re: Livaniana taverna

Do we know whether the taverna still closes at lunchtime? We were disappointed last year to find it shut when we passed, having been accustomed to the honesty box system previously.

Re: Anopolis to Kalli Lakki down the Sfakiano gorge

Poppy's son Stamatis is probably a good bet for a lift. Surprisingly, his idea of an early start isn't before 0700 but that should be OK. He'll charge you, but not an unreasonable amount.

Re: Urgent need for a new ferry pier in Agia Roumeli

I do so hope this is successful, both for the benefit of tourists and of the local people. The proposal for a road was being discussed when we first visited Sfakia in the late-1970s and probably for years before. While I have a lot of sympathy for the residents of Roumeli, the walk between there and...

Re: R.I.P.

The answer to the rough Sfakian terrain is to take a pair of old non-waterproof boots that are no-good in our damp british climate & leave them behind in sunny Sfakia- in a waste bin of course!! I still have about 5 pairs left to sacrifice to Sfakia! Dave I operate in reverse. Two or three year...

Re: E4 accommodation

If you haven't already done so I suggest you get hold of the Anavasi maps covering SW Crete and also a walking guidebook which covers the area: our own favourite is Loraine Wilson's The High Mountains of Crete published by Cicerone Press. Armed with those you should be able to put together a possibl...
